Hey hey hey I promised comic updates, struggled through some days but I am here! I have some updates on comics I've finished, comics I still want to read, and some talk about the recent new dc solicits.
First of all, finally finished Supergirl (1982). I am so glad. Top tier comic. 9/10, would recommend. Literally one of the only thing that would make this comic better if it was longer. And the later issues felt a bit boring and it ended abruptly but overall amazing comic and a good read!
After that I went back and read some of Kara's older comic aka Supergirl (1972). Less good, a bit more confusing, but I am chugging through and determined. I really, really want to start reading The Superman Family from the 70s to read more Kara and expand on pre-crisis Superfamily :). I've also caught up with the current World's Finest. It is so refreshing and nostalgic to see these pre-crisis character fighting off enemies and working together not yet burdened by the future. Also they nail the side characters pretty well? I liked how they portrayed pre-broke Ollie. Love my little socialist.
I am still sitting on Task Forze Z and Spirit World. Excited to read!
Some more comics that got recommended to me: the current Detective Comics run is apparently really good (and has good Cass content :0). There is DC First: Batgirl/Joker. Good art and good storyline. Also the Frees aka Big Barda and Mr Miracle is looking really appealing to me right now. They came from Apokolips and escaped... what is not to love? Also, couple goals ;-;.
Shit that is in my backlog still: JLI, Impulse, Question Quarterly, Nubia and the Amazons, just to name a few. I really need to keep a list of my unfinished reads, otherwise I will forget and it will be forever uncompleted :(.
And then the new solicits! Some I am really excited about are the new Blue Beetle series and the new Supergirl title. Judging by their synopsis I am a little apprehensive. I like modern Kara well enough, but there just isn't the heart and the spunk of pre-flashpoint and pre-crisis Kara. They did her melancholy, determination, anger and hope really well in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, but I don't like that she is just another face in the Superfam in current Action Comics. Oh well.
As for Blue Beetle. I feel like writers just throw villains and obstacles at their heroes and call it a day. But where is the overarching story arc? The daily life and civilian side of heroes? The villains are also symbols to represent something meaningful in the hero's story. And I want really good exploration of motives and struggles of the heroes unique to them. Blue Beetle (2006), Impulse (1995) and Batgirl (2000) does this really well.
So that is my update on how things have been going for me. I also really want to re-read some stuff and post and talk about my favourite panels (Spectre (2001) is still haunting my brain), and for now my plans on comic reading is finish Supergirl (1972) -> read Spirit World and then I'll see where I go :).

Date: 2023-07-27 12:51 pm (UTC)i've actually started to read WW: Historia already a few months back but i stopped bc i hit a reading roadblock and my backlog collapsed under it's own weight.... thankfully i'm picking it back up, but i do remember what i have read already! and i can tell you: it is sooo good. the art is literally insane. but it is more than only the art and the visual *appeal*, it is the way they *used* the visuals to tell the story. when you read it you understand <3
i am so excited for you to read blue beetle! it is one of my favourite books ever.
it's actually so funny how we keep shoving our favourite books at each other like "read this, read this, it's so good!" and reading what the other recommended us. we achieved true bookclub vibes let's go :D
