spirit world review (so far)

oraclebirdsRead Spirit World finally!! Boy oh boy do i have many thoughts. Without further ado:
This is seriously one of the best ongoings that DC is putting out at the moment (I also really love World's Finest). The way that they introduces Xanthe is well done, because I was immediately captivated by them. Xanthe is unique, with an awesome design, a spunky attitude, amazing worldbuilding and their struggles are real. We only known them from their introduction in Lazarus Planet and only 3 issues so far but with what they've done with them, Xanthe already feels fleshed out and a really interesting character!
The spirit world instantly made me curious, and it feels like such a cool new aspect to be added to the DC universe! It isn't too big so that it intrudes in other aspects of DC's worldbuilding, but it is big enough to be it's own interesting thing.
They really built Xanthe carefully and meticulously up, which yielded amazing results! By this you can tell Alyssa Wong is a talented writer, because unlike others (*cough cough* tom taylor) she actually tries to write the character as a person. You get me? Xanthe is more than an archetype and more than their connections to others, they stand on their own and feels so... real. Also everything about them is an amazing concept.
I mean, non-binary asian spirit envoy hero? Sign me the fuck up!
And then, we have, my love: Cassanthe. The whole time when I was reading the issues, all that I could think of was "wow, this is so yuri". They are stuck in each others world. THEY ARE STUCK IN EACH OTHERS WORLD. THEY ARE STUCK IN EACH OTHERS-
*ahem*. Anyway, Cassanthe non-binary lesbians would kick so much ass. I need them so much.
What I thought about John Constantine in the comic? Ehh. I feel like DC is doing this thing if there is magic involved, John Constantine must be there with them. Even though John Constantine's least favourite thing is to get involved. What I do appreciate though is that the creators brought something from Hellblazer comics and John's history into the comic. Not many do that, usually he's more like a prop to elevate the plot (ooooh, magic, ooooh). And while John definitely is a side character in this comic, he isn't only there for magic plot convenience. Because Xanthe is a magician themselves (spirit envoy, but you know what I mean). Truly feel like they should give John his own ongoing again to make up for it though.
I think I am going to do full reviews for the next Spirit World issues now? It sounds like fun, and I want to fully analyze the story to pieces unlike an overall review like this one (although this is fun as well - I can fully just dump my thoughts on here)
What more... the art is phenomenal! It is bright and fun but spooky and creepy when it needs to be.... a perfect blend! And the covers are beautiful. Cass looks amazingly cute in this art style, I love her.
Something I am majorly excited about: CASS 'OUTFIT IN THIS COMIC! OMG! I AM DYING, IT IS LIKE IT WAS PERFECTLY MADE FOR ME? It got everything I ever wanted: asian culture influences, the bandages around her arms (I am SUCH a fan of Cass' bandages in her Black Bat suit), the half mask over her mouth... It feels very different from her og batsuit, but it feels just as Cass. Like her Black Bat suit (the one before Tim gave her a new one) and her Orphan suit feels so not her. I like the black and gold and the hood in the Orphan suit but that is it. Cass should have a certain creep factor to it.
In this suit though, Cass looks like a warrior. Kudos to the artist with this design, you completely blew me away!
(I am in desperate need for a Spirit World icon - any of you able to hit me up :)?)
That concludes my thoughts for Spirit World. A whole lot of rambling for 3 issues lmao. Other news: I have finished reading Wonder Woman: Historia. And let me tell you: Holy Shit. It is by far one of the best comics I have ever read. 10/10. Serious recommend. Full review incoming ;)

so true about cass looking like a warrior, the outfit is fucking badass and i love the callback to the black bat suit with the bandages. i got SO excited when i saw that.
